Another fine win
Woking BU12s v Winchester: Won 10-0
Team: Jack McK, Sam B, Sam C, Miguel, Felix, Daniel H, Ollie H, Rory M, Daniel Q, Ollie R, Jack T
What a wet and windy morning in Winchester for a key meeting between our Woking boys and the Winchester team.
Despite the inclement weather, the boys were fast out of the blocks, with surging runs down both wings from Sam B and Ollie H but it was Ollie R who made the first breakthrough making his, Rory's and Jack T's dominance of the midfield tell with a fine goal. Four more goals followed in the first 20 minute period, Rory flicking one home, Sam B picking two up and Dan Q, the 'fox in the box', snapping up the last one.
Unfortunately, our subs had not made it to the game, so we were the bare eleven. On the other hand, given the conditions, perhaps it was for the best that none of the team would have the opportunity to rest and get cold! Certainly, no-one admitted to being tired or wanting a break.
Under strict instructions from our absent but intrepid manager, the boys went out in the second period looking for the 3 more goals required to win 8-0 and sure enough the team produced another two fine goals from Sam B, while Dan H deservedly got on the score sheet after great work throughout the match. Objective completed! 8-0.
In the final period, Winchester put on a twelfth player and we switched around our backs, who had staunched every hint of an attack for the first two periods, with our forwards. So, Felix, Miguel and Sam C spearheaded our attack and Ollie H, Dan Q and Sam B reluctantly protected the warmest player on the pitch, our goalie! Ollie R and Jack T switched in the centre of the park and off we went again. Our forwards at the back were chomping at the bit to join the attacks but Felix, Miguel and Sam C filled their new roles like naturals, with Felix picking up two more goals, finishing the match 10-0.
A few things stood out to me:
1. It's great to have Miguel back in the team. He did a great job at left back after a long absence and reminded us what an asset to the team he is. Welcome back, Miguel!
2. We are tenacious in the tackle and hungry for possession. Whenever Winchester had the ball, it was not long before they were hunted down and possession retrieved.
3. When we play as a team the confidence with which we pass the ball, use the space, get to the by-line and cross into the centre is dangerous and I'm not just talking about Ollie H's reverse crosses; we cause the opposition problems.
Many thanks to Mark for umpiring, to Will for his sage management of the boys and all the parents for bringing your kids such a long way on such a miserable morning to huddle in a wood store on the side of a rain and wind-swept pitch. I hope you all enjoyed your hot teas and coffees as much as I did at the glorious Winchester services!
