Ladies Chair Report, May 2011 (back to the top)
The ladies have had a fairly successful season all round. We had been in a bit of a slide over the past three years and this season was a stabilising one where no-one was relegated and results were promising. One of our main aims this season was to bring on some of the younger players and we feel we have achieved this.
The ladies 1’s came 8th in their South 1 division and after gaining some really good players over the season looked a sharp side by the last game. Cheryl Campling, their coach had brought in some new players and expects some others to come for next season. Some of the borderline players will then feed down to lower teams, which will strengthen the ladies section overall. Successful youngsters in this team were Phoebe Bryant and Lucy Burton Brown, who is sadly off to university!
The 1a’s ended second in the Surrey Premier division and could possibly be promoted back into South depending on who comes down. There may be a play-off. Successful youngsters in this team were Hayley Blythe and Hannah Clarke. Hannah was being helped along by Bru Baker and she may get through to NAGs!
The 2’s ended 7th in the Surrey First division. This side is a promising one and will do well next season if they all stay together. Successful youngsters in this side were Emma Sharp and Hannah Davidson who went off travelling, but will hopefully return!
The 2a’s ended 4th in Surrey Div 6. They had a very good season and this side can win their league if we get them settled quicker. The beginning of each season we have lots of instability, as the higher sides sort out their squads. This coming season, the Vets have promised to help them out the first month till we get a stable side. In this way they could win the league. There were many promising youngsters in this side!
The 3’s came 7th in their league and struggled quite a bit each week to find players. The vets helped them out each weekend with whoever they were stepping down for the week. This is a difficult side to captain, as most of the job is finding players! There are also some promising players in this side who could play higher in the club.
The Vets have been promoted to Div 4 after coming second in Div 5. This is very good news for them and they really enjoyed their season. They had a really big squad, so had to ask some players to stand down each week. The extra players mostly helped out the 2a’s and 3’s where they could. A big thank you to them for this.
We are going to have a coaches and captains meeting soon to discuss our aims for this coming season. We need to agree on a strategy going forward. All the coaches from this last season have agreed to continue, so it is onward and upward!
