Welcome to the Colts Section
Welcome to the junior section of the club and to the 2011/12 season!
The Colts section looks after the interests of our younger members, ranging from Under 6s to Under 18s, both Boys and Girls. Children who have passed their 5th birthday are welcome.
The 2010/11 season was incredibly successful, with victories in two age groups at the Mercian Boys Home Counties League Finals (Under 14s and Under 16s) and victory in the Boys Under 18s National Plate. The Boys Under 10s were Surrey Champions and our Boys Under 12s qualified for the National Finals (finishing 6th) having been runners up in both the Surrey and the South finals. In addition, we won our leagues in 5 separate age groups (including the Girls Under 14s and Girls Under 12s), and 2 of our development teams were also League Champions. Please see below for a more detailed review of the season.
However, this success does not change our club ethos which is to provide hockey for all standards. We believe that every Colt matters, whether their skill set is beginner, club level or county standard. We are inclusive, and above all, want to ensure that everybody enjoys themselves. We are proud of our reputation as being a friendly and down to earth club where all are made to feel welcome. Also, we will continue to embrace the principles of great sportsmanship.
Woking is now among the 5 biggest clubs in the country, according to England Hockey on its website:
The England Hockey website also says that “The Woking HC have an astounding junior set up. A dual pitch club fully utilise their faciilties and run an amazing amount of junior hockey. A great deal of volunteering hours goes into making Woking the well oiled machine we see at junior and senior levels.”
The 2011/12 season will begin over the weekend of Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th September with Training Times as normal.
New members can download a member registration form: membership form and send it to the Membership Secretary or hand it to your age group manager. Existing members will be given forms pre-populated with all the data that we hold for them from last season.
Newcomers are always welcome – if you would like to talk to someone about the club then please contact either Linda Jacks (Colts Chairman), Rik Farrer (Deputy Chairman) or the relevant age group manager on these Contact Details.
The training times for each gender and age group are available to view here.
Thank you to everyone who has again donated their Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers. In 2010, we collected a massive 6878 worth of vouchers and we “purchased” the following from Sainsbury’s which saved us a considerable amount of money in kitting out goalkeepers for our younger age groups (obviously we hope we will surpass this total for 2011):
1x Small goal keeper kit (3749 vouchers)
4x Goal keeper sticks (4x 549 = 2196 vouchers)
2x Sets of dimple balls (2x 399 = 798 vouchers)
1x collapsible water carrier (80 vouchers)

Woking Colts Make England Regional Squads!
We are proud to announce that 4 of our junior members have been selected for England Hockey Regional squads this Autumn.
Lucy Poffley (an U17) attended the High Performance Assessment Camp (HiPAC) on October 7-9 at which she trained with some of the country’s finest coaches. As an integral step on the Single System ladder, the HiPACs aim to show players in the U15 and U17 age groups that training is as important as competition and they were taken through a number of sessions on the pitch and in the classroom.
Phoebe Bryant, Matt Ming and Chris Way will all compete at either the U16 or U18 "Futures Cup", which is a competition based on a Junior International tournament. Two days of training/preparation are held in October prior to the squads coming together for the competition in Cannock which takes place from 27th – 30th October.
All players are keen to acknowledge the support & coaching provided from everyone (coaches, team mates & committee) at the club to get them to where they are. Most of their training and encouragement has come from the club, both at colts and senior levels, and they thank everyone for giving them the opportunity for such a great experience.
We, in turn, congratulate them on their achievements and wish them all the very best of luck!
Double Victory for Boys Under 14s and Under 16s
The Boys Under 14s and Under 16s achieved an unprecedented double in the Mercian League Finals at Southgate on 8th May. For both age groups to qualify for the “Finals Day” was an excellent achievement, but for both to be victorious against the top sides in the South of England was unbelievable.

First up, the Boys U14s won the semi-final against Purley Walcountians by 3-1, and we were lucky that in the other semi-final, Canterbury (who had beaten us 3 times in the last year) were knocked out by Southgate. In the final, we were 1-0 up at half time against the hosts, and then went 2-0 half way through the second half when a perfectly weighted through ball from Eddie Way found Man of the Match Matthew Cornwell who calmly took it round the keeper to score. We conceded with 5 minutes to go and then had to hang on for a 2-1 victory.

By the time the Under 14s presentation had finished, the Under 16s had started their semi final against Canterbury and were already 0-1 to a penalty stroke in the 2nd minute. Still 0-1 down at half time, we stormed back with 3 second half goals to win comfortably in the end by 3-1. The final was against Wycombe who were top of the Premier League with 7 wins out of 7 and National Finalists, but we raced into a 3-0 lead at half time, with the goal of the season by Man of the Match Chris Way, reverse sticked in off the under side of the cross bar. Early in the second half it was 4-0, but the tide turned and we were soon pegged back to 4-2 and down to 9 players, but some desperate defending allowed us to break away in the final minute to make it 5-2.
Congratulations to all the boys, and also the Coaching Teams of David Knapp for the Under 14s and Vin-Sing Ming for the Under 16s.
The Colts – and there are now more than 350 Colts in the club - had a particularly successful season in 2010-11. Achievements included:
- The Boys U10s were Winners of the Surrey Cup, and, in the South Finals, were 3rd in their group of 8.
- The Boys U12s were runners up in the Surrey Cup, and also runners up in the South finals. This qualified them for the National Finals at which they finished 6th. They were also Champions of Wessex (Hampshire) League Division 1 (with a 100% record). The Boys U12 Development team were also Champions of Wessex League Division 2.
- The Boys U14s were Champions of the Mercian Home Counties Boys League, having won their regional league (with a 100% record) and then being successful in 3 rounds of play offs against other league winners and runners up. Additionally, we were runners up in the South Finals.
- The Boys U16s were also Champions of the Mercian Home Counties Boys League, having won their regional league and then being successful in 4 rounds of play offs against other league winners and runners up.
- The Boys U18s were Winners in the final of the National Plate (travelling to Manchester for the semi final and final). We were quarter finalists in the Mercian Home Counties Boys League. Also, the Boys U18 Development team were Champions of Wessex League Division 2.
- The Girls U10s were Runners Up in the Surrey Cup, and, in the South Finals, were 3rd in their group of 7.
- The Girls U12s were Winners of the Home Counties Regional league (unfortunately play offs against other league winners were unable to be arranged). We also achieved 3rd place in the Surrey Cup, and, in the South Finals, were 4th in their group of 8. This age group also toured to HC Twente in the Netherlands for an unforgettable weekend.
- The Girls U14s were Winners of the U14 Home Counties Regional League, having won their regional league and were quarter finalists in the play offs. We also finished in the Top 6 of the South Finals.
- The Girls U16s reached the last 16 of the National Cup, winning through three rounds.
